Sagrouchni: Integrating Tamazight into institutions is a strategic choice for the state

The process of implementing the official status of Tamazight is progressing rapidly within various Moroccan state institutions, as part of a process aimed at moving from the stage of legal recognition to actual integration into public administration and services. This initiative is one of the strategic projects that reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to promoting cultural and linguistic diversity as an integral part of its national identity.

In this context, the Minister of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, Amal El Fellah Seghrouchni, affirmed that Tamazight is increasingly present within the public sector through practical programs and initiatives aimed at bringing services closer to citizens who speak it in its various linguistic varieties.

Recent years have seen the launch of a series of projects aimed at enhancing the presence of Tamazight in the administrative and institutional space, including training employees in Tamazight, providing reception staff capable of communicating in it, as well as its inclusion in a growing number of administrative signs and signage on public institutions’ transport vehicles.

This effort has also extended to the digital realm, where work has been done on translating administrative and communication documents and content into Tamazight, in addition to developing language tools and references that help standardize administrative terminology and facilitate its use across various departments and institutions.

Observers believe that the success of this process is not only linked to enacting laws or issuing directives, but also requires investment in human resources and the training of competencies capable of ensuring an actual and sustainable presence of Tamazight within the Moroccan administration. The more the circle of employees proficient in the language expands, the greater the ability of institutions to provide more comprehensive services that respond to citizens’ needs.

For its part, the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture (IRCAM) is considered one of the main actors in this process, whether through training, scientific research, or developing the linguistic tools necessary for the integration process. It also continues to contribute to supporting various initiatives aimed at enhancing the place of Tamazight in public life.

As efforts continue on multiple levels, it appears that the process of implementing the official status of Tamazight has entered a new phase characterized by the transition from symbolism to daily practice, thereby strengthening the status of this language as an authentic component of Moroccan identity and a fundamental tributary of its cultural and civilizational heritage.
