Amazigh Spring demonstrations held in Marrakech, Agadir, Rabat

On April 19th 2026, demonstrations in Marrakesh, Agadir, and Rabat called for unity in struggle and raised the injustices that Imazighen face today in Morocco, including systemic marginalization, over-grazing, and the continued detention of Amazigh political prisoners. The movement also called for support for those affected by the Al Haouz earthquake and numerous recent floods, many of whom remain without shelter.

This year marks the 46th anniversary of the Amazigh Spring (Tafsut n Imazighen), an uprising starting in Kabylia in response to ongoing repression of the Amazigh people. Commemorations of the Amazigh Spring represent not only the events of 1980, but also a commitment to the revitalization of Amazigh language and culture and resistance to decades of forced Arabization policies imposed on the people. This date serves as an important pillar in Amazigh memory and the continuity of struggle across generations.

However, we have not seen similar mobilizations in the Rif, highlighting the need for coordination and unity between Amazigh associations working to combat shared experiences of marginalization. It is also notable that the Rif has suffered from severe repression in response to the Hirak demonstrations, which may be contributing to this year’s silence during the Amazigh Spring.
